What is abortion
Abortion is when a pregnancy is ended so that it doesn't result in the birth of a child. Sometimes it is called 'termination of pregnancy'.
Women's health clinic cares for women with an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy. We treat thousands of women who've decided that abortion is the right choice for them, and give advice and counselling to women who don't know what to do next.
An unplanned pregnancy can be overwhelming. Suddenly your life is completely different and it’s hard to know what to do. What’s right for you? If you’re considering abortion, it’s important to know about the procedure. There are various abortion procedures available during different stages of pregnancy. And, with any medical procedure, there are potential risks to consider before making a final decision.
As soon as a woman has missed a period, a pregnancy test should be done to confirm her pregnancy. As soon as pregnancy is confirmed, an abortion can be carried out as long as she is sure she does not want the pregnancy to continue. Very early abortions can occur soon after the woman has missed her first period.
Most hospitals and clinics will not consider termination beyond 18-20 weeks. If you are considering having an abortion, you should seek your doctor’s advice as soon as possible. An ultrasound scan is used to pinpoint the pregnancy’s exact stage. There are time limits to abortions, so the sooner you seek help, the better.

What is the abortion pill
The abortion pill is a medicine that ends the pregnancy. The medical name for the abortion pill is mifepristone. It works by blocking the hormone progesterone. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down and the pregnancy cannot continue.
The abortion pill is followed by another medicine called misoprostol, which makes the womb contract, causing cramping and bleeding similar to a miscarriage.
Up to 10 weeks: At-home or in-clinic care
This service is a safe and legal way to end a pregnancy at an early gestation without needing to attend a clinic for treatment. If clinically suitable, you can receive abortion pills by post a few days later, or we can book you for treatment in clinic. Sometimes a scan or other in clinic checks are required before treatment.

This option allows you to come to the clinic for consultation and assessment and if you are suitable, you will be given the option to have treatment that day. This option is not available at all of our clinics.
When you arrive at the clinic:
-
You will be booked in
-
Have a scan over your stomach and / or a vaginal scan to see how many weeks pregnant you are
-
Have some personal and medical details taken (everything is confidential) and discuss your pregnancy options
-
If you are under 25 you will be offered a free chlamydia test- it is quick, simple and advisable to take
-
Your blood pressure will be checked and some blood will be taken using a finger prick test
-
You will then be seen by the doctor to sign some forms and begin treatment

About the abortion pill
The abortion pill is available for people who are no more than nine weeks pregnant.
The abortion pill is a prescription medication for abortion. It has been used around the world for almost thirty years and was approved for use in South Africa in 2015. where this abortion choice has been available for many years, 84% of people choose the abortion pill when given the option. In other European countries like Sweden and Finland, up to 90% of abortions take place using medication. Taking a Health South Africa authorized medication for an abortion prescribed by a healthcare provider is a safe, legal option. The individual can choose where to have their abortion — and the healthcare provider will advise on when and how to take the combination of pills included in the prescription.
The abortion pill might be a good option if you:
-
Have only missed one or two periods (your pregnancy is nine weeks or less)
-
Can’t or don’t want to go to a clinic or hospital or want the choice of where you have your abortion

Risks of an abortion
There are risks with any medical or surgical procedure and your doctor or nurse should explain them clearly to you before you go ahead with an abortion. Each procedure has a different set of risks and you should be given written information about those risks.
After an abortion, there is a small risk of infection. You may be given antibiotics after an abortion to stop infections. The symptoms of infection include pain in your pelvic area (like extra bad period pains), and heavy bleeding from your vagina.
Most women will not experience any problems or issues when having an abortion. However, they are safer the earlier they are carried out. Please note there is a small risk of complications, such as:-
-
Infection of the womb (1 in every 10 abortions)
-
Some of the pregnancy remains in the womb (1 in every 20)
-
Excessive bleeding (1 in every 1000 abortions)
-
Damage to the cervix (1 in every 100 surgical abortions)
-
Damage to the womb (1 in every 250 to 1000 surgical abortions)
